China Satellite 2002 was formally launched at Shanghai Jinmao Mansion sponsored by China Communication Academy and co-sponsored by Shanghai Telecom and Phang & Naughton Marketing Service Limited from August 27th -29th, 2002. The event attracted 400 attendants, including 50 representatives from renowned international satellite operators and international organizations as well as celebrated analysts and foreign diplomats in China. Chinese representatives came from government agencies, provincial telecom administrations, Broadcast, Film and TV Administration, Microwave Administration, operators, network service providers, manufacturers, financial organizations and customers. 28 companies attended the exhibition including Singapore Telecom, Kappel Communication, Advanced Microwave Technology which attended the first time. On the strength of the unreserved preparation and diversified offerings of exhibitors, the event was highly acclaimed by representatives and visitors.
    The press conference was held on August 26th, presented by 15 local media (including TV stations) and gained greatly attention by central media. On August 28th, People's Daily published the article "Emerging of Domestic Satellite Application Sector". The event was also greatly voiced by China Daily and China Post Daily.
    China Satellite 2002 reserved the always-popular technical seminar to impart both the fundamental concepts of "satellite communication ABC and latest terms" "IP Over Satellite", and invited satellite expert Gan Zhongmin to impart the new technologies tailored to Chinese conditions like "Great Communication Satellite Platform of China" and "Air Communication Platform-Satellite of the Poor".
   The opening ceremony, hosted by Hu Weiyi, Deputy Secretary General of CIC, the opening speech made by Lin Jinquan, chairman of CIC and speeches from the leaders of Shanghai Telecom Administration and Shanghai Telecom Corporation. The theme speech attracted the most attention of the attendants. Liu Cai, vice chairman and secretary general of CIC, outlined the vision of Chinese telecom industry after entry into WTO. Qi Chengyuan, deputy director of, Hi -tech Industry Division,China Sate Planning Committee, depicted on the significant of satellite application to Chinese high-tech industry, current situation and challenges, guidelines and strategies of Chinese satellite application industry with the specific direction "oriented to industrialization, develop the satellite application guided by the market demand". Wu Guoxiang, director of Communication and Space Technology Division,UN-ESCAP, reported the achievements and experience of the organization in Asia-Pacific region last years to guide the satellite application in China. Meanwhile, the strategies of China Satellite, booming Yu'nan Satellite Communication, broadcast/TV and remote education system, the theme report of Chinese first CDMA satellite comprehensive application and Chinese satellite application and development, promptly mirrored the latest development of Chinese communication sector reform and "Go West" strategy of China. To echo the satellite navigation/positioning industrialization advocated by the State Development and Planning Committee, China Satellite 2002 also launched the theme of "China Satellite Navigation and Positioning and Remote Sensing Application, consisting the speeches of four successful pioneers in satellite navigation information comprehensive services, vehicle application, logistic delivery and Beidou civil system including Aeostrong Technology Co.,Ltd and Long March Launch Vehicle Technology Co.,Ltd and China Country Resource Remote Sensing Center, in an effort to exhibit the great potential of satellite navigation/positioning and remote sensing application and pursue the industrialization path with professional segmentation, value chain splitting and enriching of service contents.
    China Satellite 2002 opened in Shanghai and organized Shanghai theme speeches to reflect the booming development of satellite communication, broadcast and TV in Shanghai. Shanghai Telecom, Shinahai Culture Broadcasting Film&TV Group, Shanghai Securities Satellite Co., Ltd and Shanghai VSAT introduced their success stories in recent years, thus fully exhibiting the vitality of satellite application and urban development in Shanghai. The event further touched on new applications like satellite Internet and broadband satellite system, and invited international renowned satellite consulting company to introduce international satellite application trends, VSAT technology's relationship of competition and mutual benefit with optical fibers as well as the discussion of the risk management of the space industry through "specially invited reports", VSAT development in China after entry into WTO, financing preparation of Chinese companies after WTO entry, Taiwan satellite application development and etc. The reports greatly broadened the vision of the audience, drastically facilitate the development of satellite application market and deeply attracted the attendants.
   The event made the conclusion with the Elite Round Table, which summed up the 3-day event and touched on the top topics like listing of Chinese satellite companies, investment of foreign investors to Chinese satellite sector via direct exchange.As required by General Design Department of No. 5 Institute of China Space Technology Group, China Satellite 2002 launched a small-scale forum in the evening of August 28 to collect feedback of the customers, manufactures and service providers for China broadband multi-media communication satellite application project, which reflected the function of China Satellite 2002 as a platform to boost the satellite application development.
   China Satellite 2002 also organized some representatives to visit Shanghai Telecom, Shanghai Radio & Satellite Earth Station, Shanghai VSAT and Shanghai Stock Communication Co., Ltd on 30th.
    In general, China Satellite 2002 was great success in terms of the fulfillment of expected goal although it need to be improved in the future. Some attendants hoped to have the opportunity for questions and discussions, and the organizing effort should be more timely and considerate. It was also a pity to see the absence of Yang Qianli in illness, the chairman of the CSat.
